That the Board receive an update on the Mary Bergeron Elementary School project, as information.
Interior work on the classrooms and administration area is almost complete. The gym and
learning commons is scheduled for completion in October and the playground is scheduled to
start installation towards the end of August. The furniture from Evergreen and A.H. Dakin is
being moved the week of August 23, 2017. The exterior panelling and stucco work has started
and the parking lot and drop off loop is scheduled to be completed by the end of August.
    Landscaping will start in September.
    Context of the Recommendation:
October 8, 2014, the Province of Alberta announced school projects that would be moving forward
immediately. Included in this announcement was the replacement of the A.H. Dakin School.
February 27, 2015, administration and representatives from Alberta Education and Alberta
Infrastructure toured Evergreen School. Following this tour, administration recommended to the
Board of Trustees that the modernization of Evergreen School be included in the 3-Year Capital
On April 8, 2015, the Board of Trustees approved the 3-Year Capital Plan which included the
    modernization of Evergreen School.
June 2015, as a result of the request in the 3-Year Capital Plan and the earlier tour of
Evergreen School, Alberta Education shared their internal evaluation of the A.H. Dakin and
Evergreen Schools and included the replacement of Evergreen School by adding space to the
A.H. Dakin/Evergreen Project. Representatives of Alberta Education have indicated the

    ● The replacement of A.H. Dakin alone would be only supported to 200 students (not 350
requested by the Board). This is based on Dakin’s current enrolment and changes to
school facility guidelines which construct schools to 100 % capacity.
    ● Alberta Education would support including the replacement of Evergreen School within
the current replacement project, expanding the project to a single 450 student school,
noting the Board’s request to have Evergreen School modernized.
October 7, 2015, Alberta Education announced that the A.H. Dakin/Evergreen school project
has been fully approved with an opening capacity of 450 students with the permanent core
sized to accommodate a fully built out capacity of 500 students. The full build out would be
realized through the addition of two modular classrooms.
December 16, 2015, the Board of Trustees approved the plans, in principal, for the Edson
    Replacement School.
January 11, 2017, the Board of Trustees approved the name for the new replacement school in
Edson that is currently under construction to be: Mary Bergeron Elementary School
The design committee, established by the superintendent, has representatives from many
stakeholder groups: parents, staff, school and division administration. Student representatives
may also be included, depending on the project.
